I sketched this on the beach in Florianópolis, Brazil, sitting in the sand with a 24” x 18” block of watercolor paper, the biggest urban sketch I’ve done in those conditions. The wind kept throwing up sand, the light kept changing, and I had to work fast while everything around me was moving. In front of me were the drink carts, with people ordering endless caipirinhas, muito Brazil. It wasn’t comfortable or controlled. It was done right there in real conditions, which is what travel sketching means to me, a reminder of freedom, showing up and drawing what’s happening without waiting for perfect circumstances.
